E-bituary

On May 7th, 2022, Richard “Bubs” Cann, beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away at the age 75. Rich was born on January 6, 1947 to the late Owen & Jane (nee Fossett) Cann, in Philadelphia, PA. He is survived by his brothers Owen (Kathleen), Thomas, and Eileen (John Mintzer), as well as his nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces.

Richard started his career as a member of the US Armed Force. A green beret in Vietnam, Rich served his country honorably. After his deployment, Rich completed his Bachelor’s degree at Rutgers University.  He continued to work as a Tax Examiner until he retired on May 31, 2009.

Rich was generous, intelligent, and kind, with a sense of humor that couldn’t be matched. He loved to spend his free time taking his nieces and nephews to the movies, taking vacations with his friends, and watching Philadelphia sports– especially Villanova basketball. You could often find Rich enjoying oysters during “Buck-a-Shuck” at the Pour House, spending time with the gang at The Manor, or sitting down to a family Sunday dinner.

One of the hobbies that Rich was most known for, though, was handicapping horse races. Rich spent a lot of time researching different horses and placing his bets accordingly. When he secured a big win, a celebratory steak dinner was usually in order.  Although Rich passed away just hours before the Kentucky Derby, one of his biggest days of the year, his spirit lived on. “Rich Strike” won the race at the last second with 80-1 odds. For his final Derby Day, Rich took home gold.

The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Richard. Family and friends will remember him for his quick jokes, extensive knowledge of trivia, and his always-stellar recommendations for restaurants.

Family and friends are invited to gather with the Cann & Mintzer families on Friday, May 13th, to celebrate Rich’s life. Visitation will take place from 8:30-10:30am at Creran Celebration Etherington & Creran Funeral Homes, located at 400 White Horse Pike, Oaklyn, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, St. Aloysius Church, located at 37 W. Haddon Ave., Oaklyn, NJ. Interment and the rendering of United States Army military honors will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made via mail to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692, or online at www.heart.org
