Mary Grace Lutz Izzo

July 1, 1951 — November 16, 2020

Mary Grace Lutz Izzo passed away peacefully in her Haddon Township, NJ, home on Monday, November 16, 2020, after a long and hard-fought illness. Known for her gentle voice, strong convictions, and profound intelligence, Mary advocated for those who could not advocate for themselves, particularly children and adults with special needs.

She enjoyed discussing books, movies, television shows, politics, and recipes with those closest to her. She showed love through elaborate snacks, second helpings, loaned books, and ready assistance. Mary had a razor-sharp wit and was steadfast in work, friendship, family, and principle.

Mary was born in Southwest Philadelphia on July 1, 1951, to John and Mary (nee Burke) Lutz. She graduated with honors from West Catholic Girls High School in 1969, as president of her class, and later earned a degree in English from Temple University. Mary put her education to use in her career, first as a copy editor for Packard Press, and later as a teacher’s aide at Van Sciver Elementary School, where she worked for thirty years. She continued learning throughout her life as a crossword enthusiast and lover of literature. She would have improved this obituary.

Mary is survived by her children John, Gina, and Maria; siblings John Jr., Catherine, Joseph (late Diane), James (Lisa Bond); nephew Jackson; and many others who knew and loved her. It will come as no surprise to those who knew her that there will be no services, per Mary’s direct request. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Arc of Gloucester, the Camden County Library, or your local library.
