E-bituary

Optimism is found at the corner of hope and resilience. Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. Leadership is the courage, creativity, and capacity to inspire participation and development. John C. “Jack” Brandt was a lifetime neighbor, activist, and leader in Gloucester.

Jack was just something special. As we express our gratitude we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. Mr. Brandt put action in place of words leaving an indelible mark on so many of us. This life isn’t about having amazing experiences, it’s about making every day amazing because, what we do for ourselves dies with us, what we do for others remains.

On Sunday, August 6, 2023, Jack died, at the age of 76, and took his world with him. His guiding hand will remain with us forever.

Mr. Brandt was born in Camden and had spent all of his years in Gloucester. He graduated from Gloucester High, class of 1965 where he competed as quarterback, # 10 for the Lions. Jack was honored to be in the very first class inducted into the Gloucester High School Hall of Fame. Mr. Brandt spent years coaching Gloucester midget football and had served as President. He protected our community by volunteering his time with the Gloucester City Fire Dept. and turned vision into reality with grassroots determination as a Gloucester City councilman. Jack was a basketball referee and he was the “go-to” guy who organized the referees for the summer CYO basketball league, for decades. THANK YOU.

Mr. Brandt is the widower of his late wife, Bette Jane (nee Grasmick) Brandt, and is survived by his sons; Ronald & his wife Michelle, Frank Brandt, and his dear, daughter-like, Jessica. Jack is the proud grandfather of; Melissa, Nicolas, and Gabrielle Brandt and great-grandfather of Kayden Protico. Mr. Brandt is the brother of the late; Betty & her husband John Dobleman, Eleanor & her husband Alfred Higginbotham, Marian & her husband Robert Hagan, Earline & her husband William Hillman, the late Earl C. “Butch” Brandt, Jr. and his widower John J. Sweeten. He is also survived and will be sadly missed by his devoted niece Eileen Burman God children, Michelle Osborn (Stone), William “Billy” Hillman as well as many nieces and nephews.

Relatives, friends, neighbors, alumni, and athletes are invited to gather with the Brandt family. We’ll come together to remember, celebrate and share our heartfelt stories on Saturday morning between 9:00 am and 11:30 am at Creran Celebration Etherington & Creran Funeral Homes 700 Powell St. Gloucester where a remembrance ceremony will begin at 11:30 am. A graveyard is a place where the dead rest and love speaks. Together we will bear witness to love’s reunion at Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson.
