Charles R. Dawson

September 11, 1945 — March 21, 2022

Charles Robert Dawson, 76, of Oaklyn, NJ passed away on March 21st, 2022. Husband to Jo (Thomas) Dawson and father to Stephanie (Contino) and Melissa, he was born on September 11th, 1946, in Philadelphia, PA.

Charles, son of Charles and Rita (Frangipani) Dawson grew up in the West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia with his siblings Judy (Roesser), Susan (Faillaice) and Robert. He graduated from Cardinal Dougherty and soon after he was drafted into the Army in 1966 during the Vietnam War. He served two years as a United States Army Specialist and received a National Defense Service Medal for Marksman(Rifle)

Charles, known as Bud went on to work for Exxon Mobile for the majority of his career. He started out driving a dray truck and moved up to delivering fuel oil. He finally caught a break and was promoted to driving a gasoline truck and finished his career delivering gas to gas stations. During the busy winter season, Bud would work 70 hours a week to provide for his family. On weekends he would head down to Ventnor with his friends where he met his beautiful wife, Jo. One year later they got married and went on to have two daughters, Stephanie and Melissa.

Friends and family were everything to Bud. As a teen, he loved hanging out with his friends on the street corner and their bond from their early days turned into lifelong friendships. Bud also enjoyed his family time, he loved going to his parent's house every Sunday where he would have dinner with the entire family in Wyncote, PA.  He also loved spending time down the shore with everyone. From fishing on the beach or the bay to walking around shore towns enjoying the weather, the beach was his happy place. He was also an avid lover of sports. The Eagles & Phillies were his favorite teams to watch and loved the NCAA tournament. He would get together every year with childhood friends at Connie Macs and watch the “final four”. Other hobbies he loved were any sport Stephanie and Melissa played, no matter how hot or cold, he was there cheering them on.

When Bud was finally able to retire, he enjoyed the simpler things in life. He enjoyed daily walks around the neighborhood, meeting friends for lunch, and spending time down the shore with family and friends. Bud and Jo enjoyed their day trips to Atlantic City, trips to the farmers market, and going out to dinner. His greatest joy was his grandkids, Harper and Alex. He enjoyed being in their lives, whether it would be picking them up from school, cheering them on at their games, or just hanging out. It didn’t matter what time of day or how far away you were, if you needed him, he was there for you. Definitely, a man of few words but always had the right ones to make you feel better and safe. He was the best father, the greatest Pop-Pop, and the most loving husband with the biggest and most genuine heart.

Preceded in death by both parents, he is survived by his wife Jo: daughters Stephanie and Melissa; Son in law Alex; granddaughter Harper and grandson Alex; siblings Judy, Susan, and Robert; his nieces and nephews; godchildren and his huge circle of friends.
