Carol T (Matthews) Henry

December 9, 1934 — December 4, 2020

Carol T. Henry

of Gloucester City, NJ

Passed away peacefully on Friday 12-4-2020 after a 4yr battle with cancer.

Born in New York City, she moved to New Jersey as a young child, eventually settling in Gloucester City. She graduated Gloucester City High School in 1953 and worked early on as a bank teller.

As a Mother of 5 children, she led an active life. She was a Girl Scout leader for several years including time as cookie mom. Mom drove us to swimming lessons, and Sunday pony rides in Bellmawr. We went to the Villas in Cape May each summer. She was a great daughter to her parents, spending each Saturday at their home caring for them, gardening and cleaning. Every Sunday there was dinner with games of Pinochle being played. She became a single parent in the mid seventies and went back to school where she achieved a certificate from CETA and worked for The March of Dimes and a travel agency before obtaining a job with the ARI Division of Holman Enterprises working as a fleet manager of leasing. She worked there for 20+ years before retiring at age 62.

She retired and joined the Gloucester City Seniors on trips to Lancaster & Myrtle Beach. Her favorite trip was the one they did each year to Atlantic City to see the “shoe parade” of Miss America contestants. With the onset of grandchildren and great grandchildren, she had the opportunity to travel to Newport, St. Augustine, Myrtle Beach, Coral Springs, Jacksonville and Orlando

She loved Butterfly World in Orlando, Dolly Parton’s Stampede in Myrtle Beach and Johnzarottiis from John’s Pizza. Scallops were her favorite from Colonial Diner and fried oysters from the church fundraiser. She enjoyed bingo, Wii Bowling and reading. She was also a Kansas City Chiefs fan and loved the Phillies.

She was a strong role model, raising 4 strong daughters and 1 son. She made awesome coleslaw and the worst mashed potatoes. She came by every Friday night to visit her children and grandchildren in her old station wagon. (aka the green dragon ) You could hear the valves tapping on it from a block away. Luckily, she purchased one of the first Hyundai's sold in the area thru Holman.

Mom was survived by her children, Lois Stecklair (Ed), Susan Nevins (Bob), Debra Willette( Bob), Lisa Lang ( Frank) and David Henry.

Known as Grammy, she was the grandmother of Desiree Gruff, Jennifer Lang, Erica Harmon, Christine Singh, Frank Lang Jr, Danielle Lothridge, and Rebecca O’Brien .

Predeceased by grandchildren Jason Abrams, Rosalie Kain and Stephanie Willette

Great Grandmother of Alexis & Elisha Ford, Tom Frank III, Emily, Jazmeen & Simran Singh, Piper & Kelsey Harmon, Neveah & Luca Lombardo, Benjamin & Ian Lothridge, Damien O’Brien and Mariah & Josiah Kain.

Survived by her sister Joyce Huettner (Leo). Predeceased by her brother Stanley Matthews, Jr. , parents Stanley & Theresa Matthews.

She faced cancer head on and fought till the end. We wanted to thank Dr. Patel, Dr. Slovisky and their team at Cooper Hospital. As well as the wonderful people at Vitas Hospice in Stratford for their care and compassion in her final days.

Many thanks to her friends, neighbors and staff at Gloucester Towne for rides, meals & phone calls. #crerancelebration #heartfelt
