Wilfredo Torres, Sr., 80, of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, died on December 11, 2023.
Affectionately known by most as “Freddy”, he was born December 6, 1943, in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico to Eulogio Torres and Paquita Diaz, and was the firstborn of 12 children. Freddy attended Camden High School and was a member of the Class of 1963 before entering the military and joining the United States Army in 1967. He soon joined the Camden County Sheriff’s Department serving as a Correctional Officer first, then becoming a Sheriff’s Officer where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant before retiring in 1997.
Freddy was married to Nydia Torres on March 1, 1991, and spent the next 32 years, 9 months, and 10 days enjoying her support, love, and in his final days, extreme care for his well-being. Assisting Nydia with his care was her son, Michael Melendez, Daughter, Evelyn Carlin, and special grandson Michael Melendez whom he was especially fond of. Freddy was more than just a father figure, he was a Grandfather to Michael and Evelyn’s children.
Freddy also leaves behind 3 sons, Wilfredo Torres, Jr., Miguel A. Torres (Donna Torres), Doel Torres, and a daughter, Irma Quinones (Edgar Quinones), many grandchildren along with several great-grandchildren, brothers Ruben and Edwin Torres, Sisters Nydia, Nilsa, Ana, Iris, and Gloria.
Aside from his love of music, Freddy was a “Social Butterfly” before the term was even created. He thought he knew just about everyone. He may have been one of the original founders of Facebook, but we have yet to confirm that. When he would tell Nydia, “I’m going to the corner store”, what he meant was, “I am going to Walmart” where he loved to walk the aisles. And for those who did not know, Freddy was most fond of his gathering of friends he met with regularly at Dunkin’ Donuts where almost no subject was off limits.
Freddy will always be remembered for his friendly and respectful demeanor towards others, his inspiring ways both verbally and in action, and finally, his extreme generosity to others who were in need. He will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.
Freddy was preceded in death by his father(s) Elogio Torres, Geraldo Santos, his mother Paquita Diaz, his sisters Santa, Neyda, and Ruth, and his brother Concepcion “Moose” Santos.
