Lloyd W Black

May 8, 1950 — January 26, 2020

For my part, I know nothing with certainty. But, the sight of the stars makes me dream. It's not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves. Lloyd W. Black, III was a man of intellect, wonder and inspiration. He was driven and a natural leader whose impact will endure far into the future. Astronomy compels the soul to look upwards and leads us from this world to another. Although his soul was set in the night, on Sunday January 26, 2020, at the age of 69, Lloyd left this world for another and has risen in perfect light. He had loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the dark.

Lloyd was born in Philadelphia, PA and had been a long time resident of Haddonfield. He received his undergraduate degree at the University of Delaware in 1972 and completed his Master's degree at West Chester University in 1974. Lloyd began his career in text book editing and publishing. He worked as a Senior Development Editor at Saunders College Publishing, and as an Executive Editor of Physical Sciences for the Mosby Yearbook. He taught as an Adjunct Professor of Astronomy and English at Camden County College and West Chester University. Lloyd found a great deal of success in the teaching profession. Most recently, Professor Black held the position of Adjunct Professor of Astronomy at Rowan University and is credited with establishing and developing the online astronomy course at Rowan University. Lloyd was a long-time member of the Willingboro Astronomical Society, that has now become the West Jersey Astronomical Society and served as President from 2010-2013. The stars we look up to reflect what's within us. The cosmos is within us, as we are made of stardust.

Mr. Black is survived by his loving wife Nancy (nee Marks) Black as well as a countless number of students, friends, educators, neighbors and stargazers.
