Henry Hyson

December 28, 1937 — October 22, 2025

Gloucester City

He had a soft spot for old John Wayne movies, a good ballgame, and an even better debate. Though he could be cranky in that endearing, old-fashioned way, Henry’s sarcasm and sharp humor were his love language, one that his family and friends came to treasure.

At home, Henry’s life revolved around what he loved most, his family, his Phillies, and a good cup of coffee. Each morning found him at the Mt. Ephraim Diner, coffee in hand, trading jokes, solving the problems of the world, and proving that laughter really is the best way to start the day.

surrounded by the quiet comfort of his Gloucester City home, during the early hours of Wednesday, October 22nd, 2025, Henry Hyson peacefully closed his final chapter in the company of his family. Mr. Hyson was born in Hartford, Connecticut, just days after Christmas in December, 1937. Henry’s story was one of grit, humor, and the kind of steadfast devotion that defined an era.

Mr. Hyson’s home had contributed to the manpower of our great nation, upholding the ideals of our American freedoms as a Corpsman in the United States Marine Corps and as a Drill Sergeant Instructor in the United States Army. Henry carried with him a lifetime of discipline, loyalty, and a dry wit that could light up a diner booth. Following his honorable discharge, Mr. Hyson dedicated his professional life to banking and made his career at PNC in Camden, where his reliability and integrity built lasting friendships and earned trust through his years.

Henry leaves behind his devoted wife and lifelong companion, Evelyn (nee Todd) Hyson. He is the father of and survived by his children: Kimberly Miller, Virginia “Ginny” & her husband Gary Norton, John Hyson (late Thom Shroder), and Heather Hyson. He was a proud grandfather, and his legacy continues through his grandchildren: Jeri, Rocky, Kyle, Corey, Justin, Ariel, Jessie, Emily, and Jacob, and great-grandchildren; Levi, Remington, Margot, and Daphne, a generation who will carry forward his stories, laughter, and unshakable sense of humor.

Henry is also survived by and is the brother of Frances Brown, Erwin Hyson, and Billy Hyson. Mr. Hyson will be missed by his many nieces and nephews and is reunited in spirit with his late parents, Erwin and his wife Sarah (Nee McIntyre) Hyson, as well as his siblings Diane, Sally, Tommy, Allen, and granddaughter Madison.

“Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.” – John Wayne. Henry lived by that spirit — with courage, humor, and love that will be forever remembered.

Relatives, friends, and neighbors are invited to gather with the Hyson family. We ask that everyone please come in Henry’s comfortable flannel and jeans, “retirement uniform”. We’ll come together to remember Henry, pay tribute to valor, and celebrate a steadfast, hardworking, keep-to-himself husband, father, brother, and friend on Thursday morning between 10:00 am and 11:00 am at Creran Celebration Etherington & Creran Funeral Homes, 700 Powell St., Gloucester City, where a funeral and remembrance ceremony will begin at 11:00 am. Interment and United States Marine Corps Honors will be held privately.
