On Sunday, June 8, 2025, Gerard Edward Schuler, Sr., died peacefully at Samaritan Center at Voorhees hospice. Mr. Schuler was born on September 20, 1944, just a few short months after D-Day, in Philadelphia, PA. He grew up in Oaklyn, NJ, in St Aloysius parish, where he served the Lord from childhood as an altar boy (once serving a Mass celebrated by the Bishop of Camden). He was an avid baseball player and loved Little League. He graduated, just as his brothers did, from Camden Catholic High School, class of 1962.
Gerry was drawn to helping positions and being of service to others. After a brief period in seminary, he made a career as a Communications Specialist in the United States Air Force. He traveled the world with his family, and was stationed in Turkey, Florida, Norway, Washington, D.C, South Korea, and Hawaii. He was assigned in various capacities to NATO, at the Pentagon, and to the communications staff of Apollo 11. Gerry continued his education following honorable discharge and retirement from the service, finishing up his Bachelor's degree with Troy State University in 1991. He returned to his hometown of Oaklyn, where he worked post-retirement, assisting students with special needs at Cherry Hill East High School and caring for his elderly mother until her passing.
Mr. Schuler leaves a loving family to cherish his memory, including his three children, Peg Schuler-Armstrong, Trish Menszak, and Gerry, Jr, Jamie Menszak; his two beautiful grandchildren, Ensign Sydney Menszak USN, and Todd Menszak, of whom he was very proud; and his former wife, Mary Heade. His brothers, Lawrence D. and Albert J. Schuler, and their families, were very dear to him, as well as many loving nieces and cousins. Gerry is preceded in death by his parents, Anna M. and Lawrence J. Schuler, his many beloved uncles and aunts, and his son-in-law, Scott Armstrong. Gerry was a lifelong sports enthusiast, cheering on the Phillies and Eagles. He possessed an endless curiosity about the world and all of its wonders, and was a very involved dad who loved playing games and telling stories.
Kindness is the ability and desire to have a positive impact on others, and no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. In keeping with this sentiment, a donation to Joseph's House in Camden, NJ, would be a lovely way of remembering Gerry and honoring his life of service to others (www.jhoc.org). His family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the wonderful nurses, aides, and team at Samaritan Center at Voorhees Hospice for making his final days so comfortable. Relatives, friends, neighbors, and parishioners are invited to gather with the Schuler family. We’ll come together in prayer and to take comfort in each other on Friday morning between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, St. Aloysius Church, 37 W. Haddon Ave, Oaklyn. We will celebrate Mr. Schuler’s life through faith in a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 pm. A graveside tribute and United States Air Force Honors will immediately follow at Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill.
